China-Japan (CAS-JST) workshop on environmentally sustainable systems (2014・2016)

August 2, 2016

To address the widening impact of issues in the environmental area, Japan and China work together to identify problems and find directions for future solutions by integrating social science, system engineering and urban engineering, and establishing systematic approaches.

In February 2014 Japan and China co-hosted the "First China-Japan (CAS-JST) Workshop on New Environmentally Sustainable Systems for Japan and China" in Amoy China. About 60 participants--mainly researchers from Universes and research institutions, but including some industry and municipal representatives--took part in workshop and hadactive discussions. Three topics were discussed in depth: (1) Methods for environmental policy decision and evaluation together with areal energy system and urban design, (2) Water and material cycle and waste management, (3) Environmental health risk and air quality.

Through these discussions, Japan and China achieved a common awareness regarding the significance in both urban and environmental terms of: (1) a perspective that developing the science and technology to back policy decisions on urban and environment issues is just as important as in-depth scientific research, and (2) A holistic perspective that integrates technology and policy. Finally, both Japan and China expressed their expectation of future cooperation.

The 2nd workshop was held in April, 2016 in Fujiyoshida, Japan.

The discussion of the workshops have been applied to designing a new Japan-China collaborative research program of JST-SICORP(Strategic International Collaborative Research Program).
