On September 9th 2009 a public symposium was held entitled "10 Years after Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge―Seize Science in Society and Science for Society." The symposium, held at the Science Council of Japan Hall, was jointly hosted by the Science Council of Japan, JST, MEXT, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO. Approximately 300participants attended the symposium.
The symposium gained the status of being part of the events leading up to the World Science Forum in November 2009, and the opinions voiced at the symposium were compiled into a "Message to the World Science Forum."
