International Joint Forum : Innovation Beyond Technique (2016)

August 31, 2016

2016 CNRS・EHESS/FFJ・JST/RISTEX Joint International Open Forum
Innovation Beyond Technique

jointformflyerSince few decades, Innovation has become a key to describe the positive side of what may be achieved by contemporary economies. As a concept, it has gained an equivalent status to "progress" in the 19th century or "growth" in the 1960s and 1970s. It is mainly understood as related to technological change and as the major source of development and well-being.

The purpose of this open forum is to discuss different approaches to this concept by critically assessing the relations between science, technology, innovation and society. The innovation is not limited to its technological dimension. In reality, the majority of so-called technological innovations are socio-technical innovation, requiring huge resources for financing activities, adapting regulations, designing adequate policy frames, and shaping new uses and new users, while having the appropriate interaction with society. For example, Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is an approach to be considered in the innovation process in EU Horizon 2020 and the role of social science and humanities in the innovation has been also highlighted in the science, technology and innovation policy of many countries. It illustrates how promises of innovative futures shape current behaviors when we are collectively convinced that this is essential element in order to solve complex social issues.
