JST booth at 2019 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit (Boston, MA, December 3-5, 2019)

At the MRS (Materials Research Society) Fall Meeting & Exhibit held in Boston, JST's Department of Intellectual Property Management and our Washington, D.C. Office introduced nine patented technologies and samples, selected from over 3000 patents available for licensing.

JST undertakes licensing activities to facilitate commercialization of research outputs funded through JST programs.

November 2019

JST attends AAAS Science & Technology Policy Leadership Seminar (Washington, D.C., November 18-22, 2019)

JST joined the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Leadership Seminar 2019, which is a crash course in U.S. science and technology policy. The seminar is a valuable opportunity to learn specific information about policy in the U.S. context through various interactive discussions. Participants include researchers, government officials, FA staff, URA staff and young postdocs.

The 1st Community Leaders' Meeting (November 20, 2020)

JST joined the 4th Japan-US Science Forum in Boston "It's a nano world", co-organized by JSPS and UJA (United Japanese researchers Around the world).

This year, the forum was focused on "Nano Science" and had a keynote speech by Dr. Hisataka Kobayashi, Senior Investigator in the Molecular Imaging Program at the National Cancer Institute, NIH. There was also a poster session with flash talks, awards, and a presentation session. JST held a booth exhibit introducing JST activities and research results.

JST Joins Workshop on Non-Classical Sensing (Washington, D.C., September 23-24, 2019)

JST attended the Workshop titled "Getting a Deeper Sense for Non-Classical Sensing", that was organized and hosted by Johns Hopkins University, in collaboration with NIH, NSF and AFOSR, in order to share ideas on non-classical sensing and build a network among the participants.

The contents presented covered many different topics from dosimetry & biological function to manufacturing on smart sensors. JST had a chance of introducing SICORP (Strategic International Collaborative Research Program) in a session where international research experiences by foreign funding agencies were shared.

JST Organizes Briefing on U.S. AI R&D in Academia and the Private Sector (Washington, D.C., September 18, 2019)

JST set up a briefing for the International Technology and Trade Associates, Inc. (ITTA) focused on U.S. AI R&D activities in the academic and private sectors. The briefing was based on a project JST asked ITTA to implement this year. More than 10 people attended including representatives of the Embassy of Japan in the U.S., and the Washington, D.C. offices of JSPS, NEDO and NICT.

Discussions after the briefing were energetic and productive, touching on topics such as the differing needs of tech-companies and academia, future collaboration with Chinese companies, and prominent trends in U.S. AI R&D.

Belmont Forum - Metrics Workshop 2019 (Washington, D.C., June 26-28, 2019)

Metrics Workshop 2019 was held at NSF, hosted by the Belmont Forum. The purpose of the workshop was to review and give advice about immediate and long-term monetary and non-monetary transdisciplinary metrics, including those associated with open data requirements. JST made a contribution by giving an example of transdisciplinary research in a presentation of one of the Future Earth projects supported by RISTEX.

Two outputs are expected from the workshop: one is a multi-authored peer review document for publication in a relevant journal; the other is a recommendations document targeted towards transdisciplinary support organizations outlining best practices for capturing added value of transdisciplinary approaches.

JST attends Science Olympiad 2019 (Ithaca, NY, May 31-June 1, 2019)

The Science Olympiad National Tournament (SONT) 2019 was held at Cornell University. Eight students of Japan's Kaiyo Academy, the winning team of the 8th Annual Japan High School Science Championships, were awarded a trip to the US to participate in the SONT. Kaiyo Academy students took part in four events as a Global Ambassador Team with the support of the Department for Promotion of Science Education of JST. The Japan team placed 7th in Fermi questions and 9th in Forensics.

JST discusses funding programs in Japan with Japanese researchers (Boston, MA, May 12, 2019 / Raleigh, NC, May 17, 2019)

JST set up a meeting in both cities of Boston and Raleigh to discuss funding programs in Japan with Japanese researchers including PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and researchers in companies. Representatives of the JSPS Washington Office and AMED Washington Office joined the meetings.

We also had interviews with Japanese researchers who are managing their laboratories as independent PIs, at both Duke University and North Carolina State University, and understood more about the US university research environment and what kind of challenges they are facing in terms of sustainable management of their laboratories.

JST attends Global Research Council 2019 (São Paulo, Brazil, May 1-3, 2019)

The 8th Global Research Council (GRC) Annual Meeting was held in São Paulo, Brazil for 3 days from May 1 to May 3. This GRC was co-hosted by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina (CONICET).

JST Executive Director Ms. Shirokizawa gave a presentation at the meeting of the GRC Asia & Pacific region with topics: 1) Creating systems for fair application review and project assessment; 2) Fostering early career researchers. She also made a presentation about JST contributions to the SDGs at the pre-meeting event a day before the GRC.

JST booth at Rockville Science Day 2019 (Rockville, MD, April 28, 2019)

JST had its own booth at Montgomery College for the 30th annual Rockville Science Day. We introduced the therapeutic robot baby seal "PARO". We also handed out.jst.s educational science magazine Science Window.

The 59th Sakura Matsuri 2019 - Japanese Street Festival (Washington, D.C., April 13, 2019)

JST participated in this event and jointly ran a booth named "SAKURA SCIENCE" with the following organizations as exhibitors (in alphabetical order):

JST introduced the therapeutic robotPARO and Ambiguous Objects as a research outcome from CREST. Also we handed out JST's educational science magazines Science Window English Edition.

JST President speaks at the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting (Washington, D.C., February 15, 2019)

JST President Dr. Michinari Hamaguchi attended the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting scientific session Competitive Advantage: Protecting the Balance in Africa, Asia and Europe and made a presentation titled "Scientific Cooperation and the 'Asian Union'". Dr. Hamaguchi also gave a speech titled "From Recovery to Growth - Our Lesson from Disasters" at the plenary session Responding Faster and Smarter to New Problems.

JST President talks with NSF Director Córdova (Washington, D.C., February 15, 2019)

JST President Dr. Michinari Hamaguchi visited with Dr. France Córdova, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Discussions were fruitful for both JST and NSF, the future seeming ripe with collaboration opportunities.

JST holds joint booth at the AAAS 2019 Annual Meeting (Washington, D.C., February 14-17, 2019)

Six institutions - JST, NIED, RIKEN, JAXA, JAMSTEC, NARO - cooperated to hold a joint booth exhibit during the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting. At the booth we introduced project results for each of the six institutions and our specific efforts towards achieving SDGs using videos, pamphlets, etc.

JST President talks with DOE Undersecretary Dabbar (Washington, D.C., January 9, 2019)

JST President Dr. Michinari Hamaguchi visited with U.S. Department of Energy's Under Secretary of Energy for Science Mr. Paul Dabbar in Washington, D.C.. Active discussions took place on areas of common interest including science and energy and the possibility of future collaborations.
