A Joint Workshop of the World Bank and DC-Based Research Funding Councils (Washington, D.C., November 3-4, 2016)

The World Bank and other Washington, DC-based major national research funding agencies (ANR, CNRS, DFG, JSPS, JST, NSF, RCUK) held a joint workshop on science and technology cooperation in Africa and the Sub-Saharan region titled 'Funding Science and Technology in Africa and Developing Regions'. JST introduced SATREPS activities, shared information on existing projects in each country, and discussed the possibility of continuous information sharing and collaboration.

U.S. - Japan Joint Working Level Committee on Science and Technology (Washington, D.C., July 13, 2016)

JST participated in the U.S.-Japan Joint Working Level Committee on Science and Technology (JWLC). The committee discussed areas including scientific diplomacy, big data, artificial intelligence, medical research and renewable energy, with both countries gaining a deeper understanding of opportunities for cooperation.


JST President visits University of Waterloo, Harvard University and MIT (Waterloo, Canada, July 7, 2016 / Cambridge, MA, July 8, 2016)

JST President Dr. Michinari Hamaguchi visited the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum Nano Centre at the University of Waterloo, Harvard University and MIT Media Lab to better understand:

  1. Entrepreneurship education that is still underdeveloped in Japanese research organisations;
  2. Strategies to discover new research fields and talented researchers;
  3. Mechanisms for strategic planning and academic-industry collaboration, including external funding.

The first annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (New York, NY, June 6-7, 2016)

The first annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum) took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Prof. Tateo Arimoto, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) and JST attended the forum to discuss the contribution of science, technology and innovation to the SDGs.

April 2016

JST President speaks about hydrogen society and super sumart society (Washington, D.C., April 21, 2016)

JST President Dr. Michinari Hamaguchi visited Washington. D.C. to attend two round table discussions: Road to Hydrogen Society: Innovation and Japan-US collaboration and Japan-US Round Table for Innovation and Collaboration in Super Smart Society. The former focused on hydrogen as a clean future energy source that can be used for developing zero-emission fuel, and the outlook on US- Japan cooperation. The latter was convened at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. to look into what kind of R&D is needed to deliver a super smart society and how Japan and the US could be partners in this field.

The 56th Sakura Matsuri 2016 - Japanese Street Festival (Washington, D.C., April 16, 2016)

JST participated in this event and ran a joint booth named "SAKURA SCIENCE" with the following organizations as exhibitors (in alphabetical order):

  • Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi High Technologies America, Inc.
  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
  • Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC)
  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.
  • National Institute of Information & Communications Technology (NICT)
  • New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
  • Washington Innovation Network (WIN)

JST introduced therapeutic robot PARO and several funding programs. We also distributed the English edition of JST's educational magazine Science Window.

Joint Workshop "Public Research Funders and Overseas Offices" (Washington, D.C., February 9-10, 2016)

Based upon the outcomes of the 2014 Annual Meeting of the GRC in Beijing, seven research funding organisations that have overseas offices attended a joint workshop to share best practices, identify common challenges, and discuss approaches that have been used to address these challenges. JST's Washington, D.C. Office joined the workshop along with the Beijing and New Delhi offices.
