Dr. Sato's discussion on "Science and Technology Policy in Japan and JST Activities (July 2006)

Dr. Yukio Sato, adviser and former executive director of JST discussed with the Congressional Research and Development (R&D) Caucus trends of Japan's Science and Technology (S&T) policy and important contributions made by JST. Dr. Sato explained ‘megatrends' in Japan which included the emerging threats of terrorism and unknown infectious diseases. He went on to discuss how recent S&T policies were formulated and implemented and how JST has contributed to achieving these goals through the Third Science and Technology Basic Plan (2006-2010). The United Engineering Foundation, in collaboration with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-USA (IEEE-USA), hosted the July 12 briefing for the Congressional R&D Caucus, which was attended by more than 150 participants.

Dr. Sato also spoke on "Science and Technology Policy in Japan and JST Activities" at the Library of Congress on July 13, 2006. The discussion was sponsored by the John W. Kluge Center, and the Science, Technology and Business Division, and the Asian Division, of the Library of Congress.
