AUTM Annual Meeting (Las Vegas, February 27 - March 3, 2011)
JST was an exhibitor at the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) 2011 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, February 27 - March 3, 2011. We welcomed approx. 120 visitors to our booth, which highlighted JST's activities and licensable patents from Japanese universities.
Upcoming Event: Activities for AAAS Annual Meeting (Washington, D.C., February 17-21, 2011)
The 2011 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is to be held in Washington, D.C. on February 17-21, 2011.
Officials from JST headquarters in Tokyo will be guest speakers at several seminars. JST is also organizing the exhibition booth, "Japan Pavilion," which will showcase the S&T activities of various Japanese institutions. The Washington Office is supporting preparation for these events proactively.

JST Holds Lecture on Japan's New Science and Innovation Policy (Washington, D.C., January 12, 2011)
The Washington Office organized a lecture on Japan's New Science and Innovation Policy jointly with the Embassy of Japan on January 12, 2011. The event was held at the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) in downtown Washington, D.C.
Mr. Tateo Arimoto, Director General of the Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society (RISTEX) and Deputy Director General of the Center for Research and Development Strategy (CRDS) of JST Tokyo, provided the lecture.
Japan's new science and innovation policy for the next five years (2011-2015) was finalized in late December 2010 after 2 years of protracted deliberations among government agencies, industrial sectors, and academia. The new policy will take an issues approach, in contrast to the disciplinary approach of previous five-year plans; sets a new target of combined public and private funding of R&D at four percent of GDP, with one percent coming from the government; and aims to bridge science, society, and economy in a sustainable manner. Mr. Arimoto discussed these features of the new policy as well as the challenges and opportunities of implementation in a complex and uncertain era of globalization. His presentation attracted more than 80 participants from U.S. government agencies, foreign embassies, the World Bank, academia, and private sector. Mr. Arimoto's Presentation (PDF: 2.8MB)
