2015 Materials Research Society (MRS) (Boston, MA, December 1-3, 2015)

JST's Department of Intellectual Property Management exhibited at the Materials Research Society's Fall Exhibition and introduced JST's patented technologies.


September 2015

JST visits the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA, September 9-10, 2015)

The World Bank and other Washington, DC-based major national research funding agencies (ANR, CNRS, DFG, JSPS, JST, NSF, RCUK) held a joint workshop on science and technology cooperation in Africa and the Sub-Saharan region titled 'Funding Science and Technology in Africa and Developing Regions'. JST introduced SATREPS activities, shared information on existing projects in each country, and discussed the possibility of continuous information sharing and collaboration.


July 2015

Healthy Aging Summit (Washington, D.C., July 27-28, 2015)

The Healthy Aging Summit was held in Washington, DC, with more than 500 senior health care workers, clinicians and researchers from the US federal government. JST exhibited therapy robot PARO as a result of recent research and development in Japan, and held a lecture by its developer Dr. Shibata (of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology).


U.S. - Japan Workshop on Effective Project Management (Washington, D.C., July 13, 2015)

JST and the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) co-sponsored a workshop where program managers from Japan and the United States discussed effective management approaches. There were around 50 participants, from organizations including DARPA, ARPA-E, NSF, and DOD on the U.S. side and program managers from CREST, COI, ACCEl, and ImPACT on the Japan side.

The US-Japan Round Table for Innovation and Collaboration in Higher Education (Washington, D.C., June 23, 2015)

JST held the Japan-US Higher Education Innovation Roundtable with BHEF, RIKEN, AIST, JSPS, and NEDO. Discussions took place among Japanese and American academia and industry representatives on how to incorporate information related to data science and cyber security - such as the use of big data, predicted to become a very important field - into university education. It was also an opportunity for Japanese and American attendees to build productive networks. At the meeting Dr. Nakamura, President of JST, held a session on innovation education.

DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals (Pomona, CA, June 5-7, 2015)

The DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) is a robotics competition funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DRC began in October 2012 and the DRC Finals took place in June 2015.

JST visited the DRC Finals with Dr. Kyuma, a Full-time Member of Japan's Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. In addition, we visited the bases of Japanese corporations such as NEDO and MHI in California. At the meetings, views were exchanged on work in the United States and information gathering activities in the field.

Around the World Embassy Tour (Washington, D.C., May 2, 2015)

The Around the World Embassy Tour is a signature event of Passport DC - a month-long celebration in May (May 1-31, 2015). More than 50 embassies opened their doors to visitors in 2015. The Embassy of Japan's open house is a popular site among visitors. The Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) introduced Japanese culture, food, and technologies to the public at the former Japanese Ambassador's residence. Several Japanese private companies and Japanese independent agencies, including JST and JAXA, cooperated and worked together with the JICC.

JST introduced PARO and L-eye to visitors. PARO is a therapeutic baby seal robot which provides psychological and social effects to human beings through physical interactions. L-eye is a new type of microscope that uses front camera of a smartphone. Approximately 7,500 people visited the Embassy of Japan on that day. People enjoyed interacting with PARO and L-eye.

CREST 2nd JST-NSF-RCN Workshop on Distributed Energy Management Systems (Arlington, VA, April 20-22, 2015 / Knoxville, TN, April 23-24, 2015)

JST-CREST, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Research Council of Norway (RCN) jointly held the 2015 JST-NSF-RCN Workshop on Distributed Energy Management Systems in Arlington, Virginia. Following the success of the first international workshop in 2013 (Hawaii), this 2nd workshop was organized in order for all participants to share research progress and develop a network among each other for future collaborations.

After the workshop, the group moved to Tennessee and visited the University of Tennessee research facilities and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

* Project title is "Creation of Fundamental Theory and Technology to Establish a Cooperative Distributed Energy Management System and Integration of Technologies Across Broad Disciplines Toward Social Application (EMS)" that is led by Research Supervisor: Prof. Masayuki Fujita, Tokyo Institute of Technology.

The 55th Sakura Matsuri 2015 - Japanese Street Festival (Washington, D.C., April 11, 2015)

The Sakura Matsuri is the largest one-day exhibition of Japanese culture in the United States sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASWDC).. It drew over 40,000 visitors in a single day..jst.participated in this event and jointly ran a booth named "SAKURA SCIENCE" with the following organizations as exhibitors (in alphabetical order):

  • Embassy of Japan, Science Section
  • Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi High Technologies America, Inc.
  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
  • Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC)
  • Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.
  • New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
  • Washington Strategy Group

JST introduced the therapeutic robot PARO, a new type of cellphone microscope L-eye, and Geo-Scope. Also we handed out JST's educational science magazines Science Window English edition. Approximately 3,500 people visited our booth.

JST attends the PEER Latin America & the Caribbean Forum (Lima, Peru, March 22-24, 2015)

At the request of the United States Agency for International Development, JST attended the Latin American regional meeting of the PEER program in Lima and introduced SATREPS project to Latin American researchers. Young Japanese researchers involved in the SATREPS Peru Project were also participated to consider the possibility of future cooperation between PEER and SATREPS.

2015 AAAS Annual Meeting (San Jose, CA, February 13-15, 2015)

The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) held a display booth at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in San Jose, California. The AAAS is the world's largest general scientific society as well as the publisher of the American scientific journal Science.
