Research Theme

It is widely believed that "heat can only diffuse". Recently, however, it has been revealed that, in certain crystals, "heat can actually propagate as a wave". The first objective of this research is to optically generate a "coherent wave of heat" by using stimulated Brillouin scattering. Then, the generated coherent heat-wave is expected to drastically modulate other elementary excitations that are resident in the system. The results expected in this research may open the way to develop a "heat laser", which is laser-like amplification of heat.
