Endohedral fullerenes, which have a molecule, atom(s), or metal ion(s) inside the fullerene cage, are very difficult to be produced and purified in a large amount by traditional methods. In this project, we are aiming to synthesize novel endohedral fullerenes by a molecular surgery approach, which includes making an orifice on the surface of empty fullerenes, inserting a small molecule or a metal ion through the orifice, and closing the orifice by the use of organic synthetic methodology. image
