Novel Carbon Nanotubes Filled with Designed Molecules

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been expected as building blocks for molecular electronics because of their unique electronic and mechanical properties. Although the local electronic band gap of CNTs can be tuned by incorporating molecules, it is yet unclear from either the experimental or theoretical point of view what is the effect of encapsulated molecules on the band gap modulations of CNTs. In this project, we clarify the basic rules for bang gap engineering of CNTs by photoluminescence spectroscopy and produce functional nanotube-based materials by incorporating designed molecules. image
