Event summary
The eruption of Anak Krakatau and the tsunami in the Sunda Strait, which occurred on December 22, 2018, caused considerable damage to Indonesia. With the cooperation of RISTEK, JST has publicly offered a J-RAPID fund for this major disaster. Researchers from Japan and Indonesia have since cooperated, and international joint research has started on six research themes.Volcanoes similar to Anak Krakatau can be found all over the world, and research on the causes, damage, and effects is extremely valuable. We hope this symposium will help bridge to full-scale research with outcomes that will benefit Indonesian society and others that deal with volcanoes.
At the symposium we will report and exchange views aimed at utilizing the findings obtained through joint research and surveys conducted by the six teams for the reconstruction of the afflicted area and future disaster prevention and mitigation. The presentations will be made by research representatives from both Japan and Indonesia in each project.
Representatives of Indonesian government agencies will also participate in this symposium, and possibilities for utilization and implementation of research and survey results will be discussed. Disseminating research results to society approximately one year after the disaster will be another step towards subsequent social implementation.
