Protein targeting is highly organized and well controlled in a timely manner by dynamic, specific and cooperative protein-protein interactions.

Translocation of many soluble proteins across cell membranes requires bioenergies such as ATP and proton motive force.

However, it remains unknown how biological nanomachines convert these energies into mechanical works.

To advance our understanding of the dynamic mechanism of protein export, I will focus on the flagellar protein export apparatus, which is required for construction of the bacterial flagellum responsible for motility and investigate dynamic behavior of the export apparatus by single molecule detection techniques combined with molecular genetics.
