Building Responsible Research Eco-System for Engineering Biology
R&D Project
- Biotechnology/Life Science
Overview
Engineering Biology is an engineering approach to biology, which aims to re-design a broad range of natural biological systems to meet societal needs. Its objectives vary from developing bio-economy to addressing climate change. Our project examines the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of this fast-growing field of research, and explores the ways in which we can build ‘a responsible research eco-system’ to advance it in a manner desirable not only for society but also for the Nature. Adopting a case study approach, we compare the ELSI of a number of individual research projects, and understand the key principles underpinning how we seek to cultivate our relationship to the Nature. We also develop research support tools, which will allow stakeholders of this field to advance the research collectively reflecting such principles.
