The cell, which is the building block of life, is notoriously difficult to analyze. This project will use new fabrication techniques to directly engineer tools, within the cell itself, that allow greater understanding, more accurate observations, and even light-based control of the cell activities. By combining laser beam irradiation, local field enhancement of the electric field, and thermal responses of the cell, the project will create a range of applications from probe and nano-measurement techniques to photodynamic therapy.
