General Description of the Research Project We have created new industry by utilizing crab shell waste in Japan. In this study, based on the series of research results and experiences, we will create new industry by using prawn shells in Bangladesh, which are provided enormously in the country as food wastes. Specifically, we will prepare new material “chitin nanofibers” from prawn shells, and will evaluate its functions for agricultural plants. Based on the series of functions, we will aim into practical application of the nanofibers for agricultural material such as fertilizer or agricultural chemical to increase yield of farm products. Bangladesh is regarded as the developing country in Asian countries. We will create new business by utilizing prawn shells as a functional ingredient for agriculture. We will foster the new industry making use of the local resources in agricultural area, and contribute to solve the severe poverty and hunger problems.
