“Chirality” refers to an attribute of a shape that has mirror-image pairs, like right and left hands. Recently, a phenomenon called Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS)—in which electrons passing through chiral materials exhibit highly efficient spin polarization—has attracted considerable attention in condensed matter science. However, its fundamental mechanism and potential applications remain elusive.
This research area aims to elucidate CISS at the quantum mechanical level through collaboration between solid-state physics and synthetic chemistry. We will establish fundamental principles to control chirality conversion among electron spins, phonons, and photons, and develop materials that enable such interconversion. In parallel, we will test these principles in spintronics, electrochemistry, quantum computing, and sensing, thereby pioneering new materials science and chemical processes.
