In this project, we aim at building “macroscopic quantum machines”, where the word ‘macroscopic’ has a triple meaning: (i) We create a fully-accessible macroscopic-scale Hilbert space by integrating a large number of superconducting qubits. There, we implement topological error correction codes towards fault-tolerant quantum computing. (ii) As the components of the quantum machines, we use macroscopic degrees of freedom found in collective excitations in matters; superconducting qubits are the most advanced and well-known examples. We also explore other systems such as magnons in ferromagnetic materials, phonons in nanomechanical devices etc. (iii) By combining such heterogeneous components, we construct hybrid quantum machines, which extend our ability of quantum control to a wider energy scale and a larger spatial extent.

All in all, these machines will improve our understandings of quantum mechanics and find applications in quantum information science.
