Executive Summary

This report provides a summary of policy trends in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in the following major countries and regions that should be understood as part of the basics of STI policy-making: Japan, United States of America, European Union, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Federal Republic of Germany, French Republic and People's Republic of China.

This report consists of two major parts.
The first part, "Common STI issues and trends in major countries and regions," introduces major STI trends thought to be common among these countries and regions based on following three viewpoints: to strengthen research and development systems, to realize social problem-solving and social transformation, and to construct innovation ecosystems.
The second part, "STI policy trends in major countries and regions," summarizes organizations of the authorities concerned, basic policies, funding systems, infrastructure, and policies and strategies in each discipline (environment & energy, life sciences & clinical research, systems & information science & technology, and nanotechnology / materials) in each country and region, including the latest shifts. A compilation of various indicators relating to STI has also been included.
