Units/Groups

Department of Planning and Management

The department coordinate with units and groups to deliver high-quality proposals and reports. It also focusses on activities that lead to collaboration and co-creation with society.

Environment and Energy Unit

As a fundamental field that supports the sustainable development of human society, the Environment and Energy Unit conducts survey, analysis, and make proposals on R&D related to (1) energy, aiming to simultaneously achieve carbon neutrality and a stable and economical energy supply while maintaining safety; and (2) environment, aiming to maintain and develop the activities of people and nature.

Systems and Information Science and Technology Unit

As a fundamental field that supports a sustainable society, the Systems and Information Science and Technology Unit conducts survey, analysis, and make proposals on (1) systems and information technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, CPS/IoT, robotics, information security/trust, and communication networks with a focus on information science and technology, and (2) R&D regarding the application or these technologies to society.

Nanotechnology / Materials Unit

As a field that aims to create materials and devices with useful functions through design and control of microstructures and elucidation and control of the various phenomena occurring at atomic/ molecular levels, the Nanotechnology/ Materials Unit conducts survey, analysis, and make proposals on fundamental R&D that will create innovation in fields such as environment and energy, life sciences and healthcare, telecommunications, and electronics.

Life Science and Clinical Research Unit

As a field that greatly contributes to the formation of social infrastructure, such as health and medical care, food and environment, the Life Sciences and Clinical Research Unit conducts survey, analysis, and make proposals on science and technology that support this field. These include (1) basic R&D on disciplines such as medicine, agriculture, and engineering, and (2) applied R&D on disciplines such as biotechnology, clinical medicine, and even humanities and social sciences to deal with ethical issues.

Science, Technology and Innovation System Unit

Amid major changes both domestic and internationally, STI (science, technology, and innovation) is expected to play a key role in solving social issues. In order to contribute to policy formulation, the Science, Technology, and Innovation System Unit conduct survey, analysis, and make proposals on (1) national and international policies and measures, (2) funding mechanisms, and (3) value creation through diverse knowledge, including the humanities and social sciences (Convergence Knowledge, or "Sogochi").

Transdisciplinary Group

Transdisciplinary Groups conduct survey, analysis, and make proposals on transdisciplinary fields such as

  • -evidence-based analysis,
  • -"economic security" related to science and technology,
  • -common research platforms for various fields of R&D, fusion of disciplines,
  • -science and technology diplomacy.
