Units/Groups

In each unit and group, we conduct comprehensive analysis of domestic and international science and technology innovation, as well as related social trends to identify issues. We propose research and development strategies through discussions with various stakeholders, and work to put these strategies into action.

Department of Planning and Management

This department works with the other units and groups to coordinate and build relationships with various parties both within and outside the center to deliver high-quality proposals and reports. It also focuses on activities that lead to collaboration and co-creation with society.

Environment and Energy Unit

The Environment and Energy Unit, as a fundamental field supporting the sustainable development of human society, conducts survey and analysis, and makes proposals for R&D related to (1) energy, aiming to simultaneously achieve carbon neutrality, a stable and economical energy supply while maintaining safety; and (2) the environment, focusing on the maintenance and development of human and natural activities.

Systems and Information Science and Technology Unit

Covering a foundational discipline crucial for a sustainable society, the Systems and Information Science and Technology Unit conducts survey on, analyzes, and formulates proposals on (1) systems and information technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum technology, CPS/ IoT, robotics, information security/trust, and communication networks and technologies, and (2) the R&D necessary for the application of these technologies to society.

Nanotechnology / Materials Unit

The Nanotechnology/Materials Unit is in charge of a field that aims to create materials and devices with useful functions through the design and control of microstructures at atomic/molecular levels and through the elucidation and control of the various phenomena of substances. The unit conducts survey on, analyzes, and makes proposals on the fundamental R&D of materials and devices that lead to innovations in diverse applications in fields such as the environment, energy, life sciences and medical care, information and communications, and infrastructure.

Life Science and Clinical Research Unit

The Life Sciences and Clinical Research Unit encompasses a field that greatly contributes to the development of social infrastructure, such as health and medical care, food and the environment. The unit conducts survey on, analyzes, and makes proposals pertaining to the science and technology that support this field. These include (1) basic R&D on disciplines such as medicine, agriculture, and engineering, and (2) applied R&D on disciplines such as biotechnology, clinical medicine, and even humanities and social sciences that address ethical issues.

Science, Technology and Innovation System Unit

Amid major global changes, science, technology, and innovation (STI) are expected to play a key role in addressing societal challenges. The STI System Unit conducts survey on, analyzes, and makes proposals on (1) national and international STI policies, (2) R&D funding mechanisms, and (3) value creation through "So-Go-Chi" (comprehensive knowledge), involving inter/multi-disciplinary collaboration and cocreation with diverse stakeholders.

Transdisciplinary Group

The Transdisciplinary Group conducts survey on, analyzes, and makes proposals on transdisciplinary fields such as:

  • - evidence-based analysis
  • - economic security related to science and technology
  • - common survey platforms for various fields of R&D, and the fusion of disciplines
  • - science and technology diplomacy
