International Joint Research

Japan–Thailand Joint Call for Proposals

The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Program Management Unit for Frontier Brainpower and Future Industries (PMU-B), in order to promote international research interaction and exchange among researchers, are jointly calling proposals for Japan and Thailand collaborative research projects. Please check the details of the open call below. For information on the past awarded projects, please refer to the "Projects" page.

The 3rd Call: Japan–Thailand Joint Call for Proposals on "Advanced Materials"

In the third call for proposals, we will support international collaborative research in the field of "Advanced Materials" between researchers in Japan and Thailand. A joint call for collaborative research projects is scheduled as outlined below.
Japanese applicants may choose whether or not to include researchers' capacity building* in their proposal. If included, it is required for Japan-side PIs to submit a researchers' capacity building application form, in addition to an international joint research proposal. The joint call is opened for teams with PIs from Japan and Thailand.

*Researchers' Capacity Building: JST will allocate and provide support for researchers' capacity buiding--accommodation costs (equivalent to living expenses) and research expenses--up to a maximum of 3.9 million yen per person per year, to Thai early-career researcher (ECR) candidates who aim to obtain the doctoral degree while engaging in international collaborative research.

Please refer to the PMU-B webpage and contact to the person in charge of PMU-B (the contact information is described on the guidelines) for the Thailand-side applications.

How to Apply (for Japan-side PIs)

Please complete the joint application forms above and submit them via e-Rad (The Cross-ministerial R&D Management System). This system is the designated platform for Japan-side PIs to submit their forms.

  • Both applicants, Japan-side and Thailand-side PIs, must prepare an identical proposal, which they must then submit to JST from the Japan-side PI and to PMU-B from Thailand-side PI, respectively.
  • Japan-side PI must also submit another Japanese application form (appendix for Japan-side PIs).
  • Japanese applicants may choose whether or not to include researchers' capacity building in their proposal. If included, it is necessary for the Japan-side PI to submit a Researchers' capacity building application form, in addition to both of the identical proposal and the Japanese application form mentioned above.
  • Both PIs must ensure no differences in the content of the proposals submitted to JST and PMU-B. Submitting all required documents to both JST and PMU-B by the deadline is crucial, as failure to do so will result in the proposal not being accepted.

Please refer to the PMU-B webpage for Thailand-side PI.

Notifications

  • The "Confirmation Form (確認書 in the Japanese application form (appendix for Japan-side PIs))" must be stamped by the head of the institution. Please note that in the case of a university/college, it is the president, not the dean. There is no need to mail the original. If you omit the official seal, please follow the prescribed procedure at your institution before submitting the form.
  • The Japan-side researchers are not allowed to propose more than one proposal as a PI in this Joint Call for Proposals; the Co-PI is not restricted in this respect, and is not prevented from proposing one proposal as a PI and participating in other proposals as a Co-PI. In such cases, measures might be taken to avoid excessive concentration. For details, please refer to Application guidelines(appendix for Japan-side PIs, 公募要領 別紙).
  • Japan-side PIs must have completed a research ethics training program at their institution and then declare the completion of the program to JST by the deadline of the call for proposals. Unless applicants complete a research ethics training program, their application will be deemed ineligible for funding. For details, please refer to the application guidelines (appendix for Japan-side PIs).
