Ammonia is a key feedstock for fertilizers and chemicals, but its conventional production by the Haber-Bosch process requires high temperatures and pressures and fossil-fuel-derived hydrogen, resulting in substantial CO₂ emissions. This research area aims to develop green ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions using highly efficient molecular catalysts, renewable electricity or light, and water. We will pursue three complementary approaches: electrochemical, photochemical, and photoelectrochemical processes. These studies will be integrated with operando spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, theoretical calculations, and machine-learning-assisted catalyst design to elucidate reaction mechanisms and improve catalytic performance. Through these efforts, we aim to establish next-generation ammonia synthesis technologies that contribute to a sustainable society.
