    Company Profile
Restore Vision Inc. is a startup company founded in November 2016, based on promising results of a joint research between associate professor Toshihide Kurihara at Keio University School of Medicine and professor Hideki Kandori at Nagoya Institute of Technology to develop a visual restoration gene therapy for blindness caused by retinal disorders, using a clinical application of optogenetics technology. RV-001 is the lead gene therapy product in the pipeline, using adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors with the unique functional gene coding ‘Chimeric Rhodopsin’ which is a protein-based optical sensor. It is a treatment that can restore vision in patients blinded by photoreceptor loss. They take a simple and minimally invasive approach, intravitreal injection, to deliver our therapeutic gene that will express chimeric rhodopsin in the remaining interneurons, enabling the patient to see again. Restore Vision’s mission is to deliver therapies at light speed to patients waiting for an effective treatment and end blindness by making cutting-edge gene therapy technology available to all.

    LQUOM, Inc.
    Company Profile
LQUOM is a deep-tech startup from Yokohama National University. LQUOM develops long-distance quantum communication technology, including a quantum repeater system, to realize the quantum internet. A significant advantage of the quantum internet is unconditionally (i.e., information-theoretically) secure communication. The current cryptography depends on computational security, which can be broken once a quantum computer has extremely high computational performance. Before the era of quantum computation, we need to realize the quantum internet. Currently, long-distance quantum communication is severely limited because quantum information in a single photon is mostly lost in a long optical fiber. Elongation of the unconditionally secure quantum communication requires “quantum repeaters” between two distant sites. LQUOM has core technologies for quantum repeaters and continues the development of quantum repeater systems to realize the quantum internet.

Our first target is an implantable medical device for treatment of the rupture of the ACL. Our concept is to make a medical device with animal tendon. Our tissue source is tendon from cow’s legs which is strong enough as an artificial ligament.

To prevent allergic reaction or graft rejection, we remove cells from the tissue. The tendon is freeze-dried and sterilized after removing the cells. The device is an off-the-shelf product that can be stocked in hospitals to be available at any time.

We utilize the following two key technologies invented by Prof. Kiyotaka Iwasaki. Ph.D., Waseda University:
    1. Decellularization technology radiating microwave to the tissue and washing cell components with the palatized perfusion of detergent (MAPP method)
    2. Lyophilization and sterilization technology maintaining the mechanical property of the artificial ligament and providing recovery to supple condition easily once immerse to the saline solution

These technologies could make it possible to develop the artificial ligament with biocompatibility and mechanical strength as the artificial ligament.

    SleepWell Co., Ltd.
    Company Profile
SleepWell provides scientific sleep assessment systems, including a user-friendly single-channel electroencephalograph and data-driven sleep analysis system. Both have received medical device approval from the Japanese regulatory authority, PMDA. Although it is a sleep monitoring system based on world-standard EEG, the development concept is completely different. SleepScope enables easy and natural sleep measurement at home instead of a complicated attended inspection that needs to be monitored in a sleep lab. Easier measurement has allowed SleepWell to collect a lot of data and to develop a data-driven analysis system. Such daily sleep assessments are clinically beneficial and have been appreciated by doctors in the departments of gastroenterology and diabetes metabolism as well as sleep medicine physicians. The challenge of contributing to people's health through sleep science will expand from Japan to the world.
