Cooperation with EMBO
In July 2023, JST signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with EMBO, allowing JST-supported researchers to participate in select EMBO programs. To support researchers in Japan in building international networks with leading life science researchers in Europe and to foster the development of future global research leaders, JST is implementing the following collaborative activities with EMBO in FY2026. We encourage researchers to take full advantage of these opportunities.
Participation of JST Researchers in EMBO's Funding Programs
Researchers currently supported under specific JST programs are eligible to apply for the following three EMBO's funding programs. Please refer to the application guidelines for JST-supported researchers for detailed eligibility criteria and application procedures(available only in Japanese.).
● Young Investigator Programme (YIP)
The program supports life scientists who have been group leaders for at least one year and for less than four years at the time of application. Selected researchers will receive funding and networking support over four years and gain access to an international network of more than 800 current and former EMBO Young Investigators across and beyond Europe.
Application deadline for the 2026 call: April 1, 2026, 19:00 (JST)
| Eligible JST Researchers: |
Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs currently supported by the following JST programs (Research Directors or Group Leaders for ERATO) : -Strategic Basic Research Programs (ERATO, CREST, PRESTO, ACT-X) -Fusion-Oriented Research for Disruptive Science and Technology (FOREST) -Adopting Sustainable Partnerships for Innovative Research Ecosystem (ASPIRE) |

● Global Investigator Network(GIN)
The program supports life scientists who perform life science research in EMBO partners outside of Europe, including Chile, India, Singapore, or Taiwan and have been group leaders for at least one year and for less than six years at the time of application. Selected researchers will receive funding and networking support over four years and gain access to an international network of more than 800 current and former EMBO Young Investigators across and beyond Europe.
Application deadline for the 2026 call: May 1, 2026, 21:00 (JST)

● Scientific Exchange Grants (SEG)
Scientific Exchange Grants support research visits of up to 3 months to laboratories in EMBC Member States in order to build new collaborative relationships. Selected researchers will receive support for travel and subsistence costs related to the visit.
Call open all year (Travel period must fall within Japan's fiscal year 2026.)

JST-EMBO Joint Matchmaking Activities
JST and EMBO have been conducting matchmaking activities to strengthen and expand the network between outstanding young researchers in Japan and Europe in the life sciences. Two matchmaking events have been held so far once in Japan and once in Europe, with over 100 participants in total. In FY2025, during March 12 – 14, 2026, 10 JST-funded researchers will attend the Young Investigator Network Meeting, which brings together members of the EMBO Young Investigator Network, a prestigious community of leading young group leaders across Europe.
In FY2026, more topic-focused meetings will also be open for JST-funded researchers to attend so that the researchers can effectively find potential partners. Details will be provided shortly.
(February 26–28, 2025 @ European Molecular Biology Laboratory,Heidelberg)
Participation of JST Researchers in EMBO Lab Leadership Course
The EMBO Lab Leadership Course is a small-group training program operated by EMBO Solutions, a subsidiary of EMBO. The Course helps scientists get the best from themselves and their people through trainings in “soft skills” such as leadership, communication, and project management.
From the FY2026, JST and EMBO will start supporting the participation of JST-funded researchers in the Lab Leadership Course, held regularly near Heidelberg, to foster researchers capable of demonstrating internationally outstanding leadership. Details will be provided shortly.
