Moonshot Goal 8 promotes innovative research and development of "weather-control technologies," aiming to realize a safe and secure society free from the threats of extreme weather disasters by 2050, through the mitigation of increasingly severe typhoons and heavy rainfall.
Recent research and simulations suggest that human intervention may influence the behavior of typhoons and heavy rainfall. Accordingly, Moonshot Goal 8 is preparing for field experiments with careful consideration of Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI), while simultaneously enhancing weather forecasting and control technologies, quantifying the effects of disaster prevention, and identifying viable routes for societal integration.
To address the technical and societal challenges of weather control, Moonshot Goal 8 hosts an international symposium that brings together experts from diverse fields such as meteorology, engineering, mathematical sciences, and humanities and social sciences.
The symposium will showcase progress from the Project Managers of Moonshot Goal 8, alongside lectures and panel discussions by leading experts from around the world.

ムーンショット目標8では、「2050年までに、激甚化しつつある台風や豪雨を制御し極端風水害の脅威から解放された安全安心な社会を実現」を目指し、革新的な「気象制御」技術の研究開発に取り組んでいます。これまでの研究開発によりシミュレーション上では、豪雨や台風を人間の力で変えられることがわかってきました。
現在は、屋外での実証実験に向けたELSI対応を含めた準備や、気象予測・制御技術の高度化、防災効果の定量化、社会実装に向けた具体的な検討などに一層注力しています。
そこで、気象制御の研究開発に欠かせない、気象学、気象工学、数理科学、人文社会学など多様な分野の専門家を集い、技術的・社会的な課題について議論を深めるため、公開の国際シンポジウムを開催します。
シンポジウムでは、ムーンショット目標8のプロジェクトマネージャーによる進捗の報告や、各分野をリードする世界中から招聘された研究者による講演およびパネルディスカッションを行います。
