Invitation for Research Proposals FY2012

This area contains information regarding details of the application process for SATREPS research projects. Applications are accepted from Japanese research institutions. Researchers in other countries wishing to propose a joint research project should either discuss their proposal with the prospective Japanese research institution, or contact the JICA office in their own country.

FY2012 SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) - Invitation for Application of Research Proposals -

Application for FY2012 Research Proposal has been closed.

The new projects provisionally selected*1 for the Fiscal Year 2012 SATREPS program. The 9 new projects were provisionally selected in four research areas -Environment/Energy, Bioresources, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Infectious Diseases Control- and also, for the first time, Interdisciplinary projects*2.

*1Provisional selection: For each of these provisionally selected projects, a "Record of Discussions (R/D)" must be signed to confirm agreement between the research counterpart(s) in the developing country and JICA on the details of technical cooperation. As a result of this process, the research project title and research term for the provisionally selected project might be modified or the project itself might be terminated.

*2Interdisciplinary projects: In the past, applicants were not allowed to apply under multiple areas for proposals extending over more than one field of research or which did not fit clearly into a specific field. Starting with FY2012, the application (form 1) allows applicants to select more than one field. Such applications are considered as Interdisciplinary field projects.

JST calls for research proposals for FY2012 from Japanese research institutions from October 11th, 2011 (Tue) to December 8th, 2011 (Thu) at 12:00 hour (noon) in Japan.

Based on the needs of developing countries, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) cooperates with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to entails promotion of international joint research targeting global issues and envisaging future utilization of research outcomes. Implemented through collaboration with Official Development Assistance (ODA), the aim of the program is to acquire new knowledge leading to resolution of global issues and advancement of science and technology. Such international joint research under the program will also address the research and development of capacity and contribute to the sustained research activities in developing countries.

Proposals for FY2012 are invited in the following fields; Environment/Energy, Bioresources Utilization, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and Infectious Diseases Control. JST accepts the research proposal that covers the multiple Research Fields/areas as the 'Interdisciplinary Field'.

Important Notes

JST begins calling for research proposals before announcement of final budget for FY2011, as the deadline of request for Official Development Assistance (ODA) technical cooperation is set in 2010 and as the selected projects will enable to start immediately in FY2012 in collaboration with the corresponding technical cooperation. Please be notified that requirements, amount of research expenses supported for a selected project and number of the projects selected may change without any notice as the result of outcome of the final budget for FY2012.

1. Application Period for Research Proposals

October 11th, 2011 (Tue) to December 8th, 2011 (Thu) at 12:00 hour (noon) in Japan
The deadline for submitting the request of the ODA technical cooperation to the Government of Japan is December 8th, 2011. Please be notified that government agency in each counterpart country may set a different deadline before December 8th, 2011.

2. Application method

The research proposals for FY2012 will be made using the Electronic system for Research and Development (e-Rad). The operational manual can be accessed or downloaded from the e-Rad Portal Site
