Japan-Indonesia Joint Call for Proposals
The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Indonesia National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), in order to promote international research interaction and exchange among researchers, will jointly call proposals for Japan‒Indonesia collaborative research projects in the field of “Bioproduction.” The joint call will be opened for teams with principal investigators (PIs) from Japan and Indonesia.
Please refer to the BRIN webpage for the Indonesia-side applications.
Information Session (Online)
We held an information session in cooperation with BRIN to explain the research field and evaluation method of the Japan-Indonesia International Joint Call for Proposals. We will also provide important information on the documents to be submitted.

Research Field
*Proposed research is recommended to follow the subtopics blow, but the themes are not limited to them hence the team is open to explore other subtopics related to the research field on Bioproduction.
Bioproduction
- Bioproduction of Engineered Protein or Enzyme
This subtopic focuses on the design, optimization, and production of proteins or enzymes with enhanced or novel functionalities through genetic engineering. - Bioproduction of Engineered Metabolites
This subtopic deals with the biosynthesis of high-value small molecules (metabolites) through the metabolic engineering of microorganisms or cell factories. - Bioproduction of Engineered Cell and Tissue
This subtopic explores the creation and scaling of engineered cells or tissues with tailored functionalities for various applications.

How to Apply
Please complete the joint application forms above and submit them via e-Rad (The Cross-ministerial R&D Management System). This system is the designated platform for Japan-side PIs to submit their forms.
- Both applicants, Japan-side and Indonesia-side PIs, must prepare an identical proposal, which they must then submit to JST from the Japan-side PI and to BRIN from the Indonesia-side PI, respectively.
- The Japan-side PI must also submit another Japanese application form (appendix for Japan-side PIs).
- Both PIs must ensure no differences in the content of the proposals submitted to JST and BRIN. Following the joint application forms above and submitting all required documents to both JST and BRIN by the deadline are crucial, as failure to do so will result in the proposal being rejected. Please also be aware of both countries' "Research Eligibility" section in the guidelines.
Notifications
- The "Confirmation Form (確認書 in the Japanese application form (appendix for Japan-side PIs))" must be stamped by the head of the institution. Please note that in the case of a university/college, it is the president, not the dean. There is no need to mail the original. If you omit the official seal, please follow the prescribed procedure at your institution before submitting the form.
- Japan-side PIs must have completed a research ethics training program at their institution and then declare the completion of the program to JST by the deadline of the call for proposals. Unless applicants complete a research ethics training program, their application will be deemed ineligible for funding. For details, please refer to the application guidelines (appendix for Japan-side PIs, 公募要領 別紙).
