OUTLINE
To measure is to know. The demand to measure things more accurately, faster, and with smaller dimensions is now a natural and pervasive part of scientific innovation. There are high expectations regarding open innovation trends for the promotion of international joint research between Japan and ASEAN countries, which share many values and principals. However, there are potential risks where the availability of advanced research equipment (mainly with a mid-range price between 100 thousand to several million dollars) such as microscopes, material analysis equipment, and bioanalysis equipment in the partner country will become an obstacle to international joint research. JST compiled a survey report titled "Trends in the Development of Advanced Research Equipment and Shared Research Facilities in ASEAN Countries" to grasp the current situation of the development of research environments for advanced research equipment and shared research facilities in ASEAN countries and revealed various efforts to improve them.
This workshop will be held as an official side event as part of the activities commemorating the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, with the aim of contributing to the promotion of international joint research between Japan and ASEAN countries. The event will promote mutual understanding among government officials and researchers regarding the environment for using advanced research equipment in each country, based on the output of the report mentioned above and presentations from government officials. We will also share information on large-scale research facilities available for international joint research, such as synchrotron and high-performance computing. In addition, we will discuss challenges regarding the environment for the use of advanced research equipment and introduce the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) as one of the support tools for cooperation between Japan and ASEAN countries.
OBJECTIVES
(1) For officials in charge of research environment development in Japan and ASEAN countries, to understand the environment for the use of advanced research equipment and large-scale facilities in Japan and ASEAN countries and the initiatives to improve the environment by each country.
(2) For researchers aiming to conduct international joint research between Japan and ASEAN countries, to understand the current environment and opportunities for the use of advanced research equipment and large-scale facilities in the country where researchers hope to collaborate.
(3) To strengthen the relations between governmental organizations of Japan and ASEAN countries.
