Press Conference 2014 by the President

Session9 – March 11, 2015 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The President gave a brief description of JST Center for Revitalization Promotion’s Approach, Outline of Budget in FY2015, Establishment of AMED and the Partnerships with JST, and the fourth Japan High School Science Championships (JHSSC).

Then, Dr. UEDA Hiroki (Professor, Graduate School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo, Cell Design Research Core, Quantitative Biology Center, Riken) delivered a lecture, titled “Imaging the whole brain, the whole body, and beyond.”

    The conference was held in the ceremony for a cooperative agreement with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). JAXA President OKUMURA Naoki and JST President NAKAMURA Michiharu delivered explanations on the agreement.

    Then, Mr. YAMASHITA Atsuya (Manager, Department of Industry-Academic Collaboration Office of Advanced Measuring Technology, JST) gave the brief outlines of the Development of Advanced Measurement and Analysis Systems program. Dr. TAKAHASHI Tadayuki (Professor, Department of Space Astronomy and Astrophysics, JAXA) also gave a lecture, titled “Advanced Gamma-ray Imaging System with an Ultra-wide Angle Field of View and a High Sensitivity.”

    The President gave a brief description of Science Agora 2014, the second Japan Junior High School Science Championships (JJHSSC), and ERATO’s new area of research and research director.

    Then, Dr. MINATO Shinichi (Professor, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University, Research Director of ERATO Minato Discrete Structure Manipulation System Project) delivered a lecture, titled “Overview of ERATO Minato project and dissemination of research products in collaboration with Miraikan.”

    The President gave a brief description on the award of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, a recent state of research misconduct and JST’s approach towards a dramatic and effective development in Japan’s S&T systems, and the Science Agora 2014.

    Then, Dr. FUDANO Jun (Professor, Kanazawa Institute of Technology) delivered a lecture, titled “Current state of RCR education and progress .”

    The President gave a brief description on a summary of “JST Action Plan 2014“ that cites specific actions to be taken among all JST staff, and points of budgetary requests for the 2015 fiscal year.

    Dr. MIZUSHIMA Noboru (Professor, Graduate School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo) delivered a lecture titled “The role of autophagy for intracellular degradation.”

  • Session4 – July 23, 2014 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

    The President gave a brief description on recent topics of the Advanced Low Carbon Technology Research and Development Program (ALCA), a new area of research and the research director in ERATO, and the publication of the second edition of social scenarios toward low carbon societies. Mr. IZUMI Shin-ichiro (Director-General, Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society, RISTEX) also explained a new area of its research, titled “Designing a Sustainable Society through Intergenerational Co-creation.”

    Then, Dr. TANG Jie (Group Leader, One-Dimensional Nanomaterials Group, National Institute for Materials Science, NIMS, Program Officer, ALCA Electric Storage Devices) gave a lecture, titled “R&D into Graphene Supercapacitor with High-speed Charge, Significant Power, and Large Capacity.” Dr. KAWAKAMI Tohru (Guest Associate Professor, New Industry Creation Hatchery Center, Tohoku University, Program Director, ALCA Innovative Energy-Saving and Energy-Producing Systems and Devices) also gave a lecture, titled “Spacially Imaged Iris-plane Ultra Low Power Consumption Display.”

    The President introduced JST’s recent topics. Research Supervisor Dr. TANAKA Yuzuru (Professor, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University) gave a lecture titled “Big data application: From a boom to a challenge” from the research area “Advanced Application Technologies to Boost Big Data Utilization for Multiple-Field Scientific Discovery and Social Problem Solving” in CREST. Research Director Dr. MIYOSHI Takemasa (Team Leader, Data Assimilation Research Team, RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science) also gave a lecture titled “'Venture into the sudden localized torrential rain prediction with ‘Big Data Assimilation.’”

Dr. YAMADA Hirofumi (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University) gave a lecture titled “See the nano world comes to life — Atomic resolution imaging in liquid by AFM”, and Dr. TAKEGAWA Nobuyuki (Professor, Graduate School of Science & Engineering, Tokyo Metropolitan University) also gave a lecture titled “Multiple analysis reveals the mechanisms of PM2.5 variation.”

    The president gave a description of JST’s new programs in the current fiscal year. Dr. NAKAYAMA Tomohiro (Deputy Director, Department of Strategic Planning and Management, JST) also explained Japan’s “Element Strategy” approaches.

    Following the explanation, Dr. KITAGAWA Hiroshi (Professor, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University, Research Director of CREST Creation of Innovative Functions of Intelligent Materials on the Basis of Element Strategy) gave a lecture titled “Artificial Rhodium—The potential for alternative alloys to Rhodium that explode the established theory of metal engineering.”
