Center Center of Excellence in Development of iPS Cell Stock for Regenerative Medicine

Summary At this Center of Excellence (COE), we aims to build a stock of high-quality, safe iPS cell lines for regenerative medicine. By setting up a supply system of the clinical-grade iPS cells, we are expected to provide these iPS cells for Japanese institutes which are working on clinical applications. Moreover, by the iPS cell technology, we attempt to contribute for developing medical and pharmaceutical industries in Japan.
In particular, based on further understanding of cellular reprogramming mechanisms, we will develop robust platform which is necessary to develop an efficient generation protocol and a quality control system of clinical grade iPS cell lines. Over the next 10 years, we plans to establish clinical grade iPS cell lines which can cover the majority of the Japanese population and also can be used internationally. We will supply these iPS cell lines to various institutions which are investigating clinical applications to develop new treatments of regenerative medicine. As a research hub for the safety and the standardization of iPS cells as well as the acquisition of iPS cell-related intellectual properties, we will reinforce the collaborative network of institutions researching clinical applications in Japan.
