The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of J-STAGE, an online journal platform for science and technology information in Japan. On May 1st, J-STAGE reached a milestone of 4,000 registered journals.
J-STAGE hosts journals published by academic societies and other organizations in Japan, with the goal of disseminating their research findings worldwide. When J-STAGE was established in 1999, academic publishing organizations worldwide had begun to take advantage of the increasing accessibility and popularity of the Internet to introduce online journals. In Japan, however, online journal publishing was only beginning to gain traction. At its launch, J-STAGE started with just three journals.
In the 25 years since, by focusing on international trends in research dissemination to meet global standards, J-STAGE has strived to constantly improve its systems and services in cooperation with academic societies in Japan. Now, as J-STAGE celebrates a quarter-century in operation, its success as a world-leading platform for science and technology information is demonstrated in its stable of 4,000 registered journals.
JST will continue to promote open access and ensure the rapid and efficient global dissemination of research findings from Japan to further enhance the services offered by J-STAGE. This year, JST will also revise its mid- to long-term strategy for J-STAGE, originally formulated in FY2018.
