Outline

Modeling is the first inevitable step in mathematical approaches to solving real-world problems. When dealing with phenomena whose governing laws are complicated and possibly unpredictable, such as those in life and society, a variety of different models are worth considering for a single phenomenon. With applications ranging from biochemical networks to power and transportation systems, this research project aims at developing systematic methods for finding the “best” model efficiently, making full use of recent advances in discrete mathematics and optimization.
