What's New - FY2017

The 1st Molecular Technology Workshop “Energy and electron transfers in molecular engineered materials”
(Strasbourg, June 28 to 30, 2017)

“Molecular technology” is a broad concept newly proposed by Japan, covering a series of technologies that enable us to qualitatively change existing science and technology through purposefully designing and synthesizing molecules and creating the physical, chemical, and biological functions of materials at a molecular level. JST has promoted “Molecular technology” in research areas under CREST and PRESTO since FY 2012. In the following period, JST and ANR (The French National Research Agency) agreed to collaborate with each other to promote this research area, and have opened three joint Calls for Proposals since FY2014.

Japanese and French researchers participating in the JST-ANR programs jointly held the 1st Molecular Technology Workshop titled “Energy and electron transfers in molecular engineered materials” in Strasbourg from June 28th to 30th. Scientists from Japan and France leading the field of Molecular Technology took part in the three-day event which included networking activities.

STOA - STS forum 2nd High-Level Conference on 'The Future of Mobility'
(Brussels, May 30, 2017)

The 2nd STOA - STS forum High-Level Conference was held in Brussels on May 30th, jointly organized by the European Parliament’s Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA) Panel and the Japan-based Science and Technology in Society forum (STS forum). The conference comprised two panels, addressing key issues regarding the future of mobility. Mr. Takao Kuramochi (Senior Deputy Director-General, Center for Research and Development Strategy, JST) gave a panel presentation on what major research challenges need to be addressed and how can funding drive the directions of research to realize ‘Sustainable Urban Mobility’. In relation to the theme, he introduced JST’s current initiatives for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through science, technology and innovation (STI) (“STI for SDGs”).

The 23rd Annual EARMA Conference "Collaboration with Japan”
(Valletta, April 24 to 26, 2017)

The 23rd Annual EARMA Conference was held in Malta from April 24th to 26th, organized by EARMA (European Association for Research Managers and Administrators). EARMA is an European organization for professional development of research funding support consisting of research managers and administrators. Ms. Nakayama (Deputy Director, JST Paris Office) presented an overview of JST’s activities, including current trends of global activities focusing on Science, Technology and Innovation cooperation between Japan and European countries. Also, a pre-announcement of a new joint call under the EIG CONCERT-Japan program in the research area “Efficient Energy Storage and Distribution” was shared with participants at the Europe-Japan collaborative session titled “Collaboration with Japan”. This session was organized by research administrators from Amsterdam University, Osaka University, Kyoto University, Hiroshima University and Kobe University in close collaboration with the JSPS London Office and JST Paris Office towards the exploration of further possibilities of Europe-Japan collaboration in the fields of STI.
