Public Engagement
Promoting dialogue with various stakeholders toward co-creation of a future society. JST also fosters next generations talents in the fields of S&T as well as human resources who can contributes to S&T innovation.
Promotion of Co-creation
JST, in addition to communication conveying the knowledge and enjoyment of previous achievements in science and technology, also seeks to promote constructive communication by sharing the tentative nature, uncertainty, and latent risks possessed by science and technology with the nation's citizens, its government, its research institutions, and researchers, for a better society and lifestyle.
CHANCE (CHAllenge-driveN Convergence Engine): the open platform for co-designing the future [Japanese text only]
In association with partner organizations, JST launched the “CHANCE” Initiative, an open platform for co-designing future society through open discussions in 2018 . Through this network, JST aims to reflect social needs in R&D and create social innovation.
Science Agora
JST holds an annual event named “Science Agora,” one of the largest open forum in Japan connecting science and society. Since its establishment in 2006, participants from various sectors (academia, private sectors, governmental bodies, media and citizens) have engaged in discussions helping to co-create our common future.
‘STI for SDGs’ Award [Japanese text only]
JST assigns the ‘STI for SDGs’ Award to activities in a region which solve societal challenges with the outcomes of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI). Through the award JST aims to contribute to the attainment of the SDGs, support and accelerate these award-winning activities, and spread good practices to the other regions.

Portal to a Wide Array of Scientific and Technological Information In addition to information from universities, research institutions, and government agencies, SciencePortal provides an entry point to a wide array of the latest scientific and technological information and introduces many useful web sites.
SCENARIO [Japanese text only]
We will introduce some of the best examples of future sessions, demonstration experiments, and research and development that are being conducted in various regions to draw scenarios for the realization of a better future society. Information related to each scenario will also be provided. Please make use of this information for researching precedent cases and finding partners for solving issues.

Miraikan-The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation
Miraikan is a place where we can understand the things happening in our world today from a scientific point of view, and have discussions while considering the future that awaits us. In addition to exhibitions that provide people with a chance to enjoy hands-on contact with science and technology, Miraikan's colorful line-up of offerings includes experienced based classes, and talks. Visitors can experience the technological progress of today, from simple day-to-day questions, to the latest technologies, the global environment, space exploration and life science.
Fostering the next generation human resources
This program aims to discover elementary to junior-high level students who have excellent qualities and motivation, undertake consistent initiatives to develop their abilities, and expand their interest and education in the field of science and mathematics.
Support for Super Science High Schools (SSH)
Under the SSH program, in collaboration with universities and other institutions, schools focus on science and mathematics in conducting experiential learning, research projects, and curriculum development. The program aims to foster students with a high level of creativity and a passion for science and technology.
Supporting Student Contests in Science and Technology
This program promotes students' interest and ability in science, technology, and mathematics and fosters future scientists and engineers at international levels. Student Contests in Science and Technology can provide young persons with opportunities for more challenging studies if they desire, as well as fostering enjoyment of scientific thinking.
Japan High School Science Championships
Established by JST in 2011, the Japan High School Science Championships see teams of high school (including specialized vocational school) students competing against each other in various fields of science, mathematics, and information technology, in order to further motivate and cultivate top-level science and technology students.
Japan Junior High School Science Championships
Launched by JST in 2013, the Japan Junior High School Science Championships see teams of junior high school students competing against each other in various fields of science and mathematics. It provides junior high school students with the opportunity to learn that science is linked to real life and to realize that it is valuable and fun to study science.
Global Science Campus
Global Science Campus aims to promote human resources development in science and technology. JST supports universities to propel science education towards high school students so that they can flourish worldwide in the future.
Fostering next-generation Scientists Program
This program, by mainly providing an advanced educational and research environment in universities and technical colleges seeks to extend the abilities of young persons with outstanding talent and willingness in mathematics and science, and to produce future leaders in the field of science and technology.
Science and Technology Challenge Program for Next Generation
Targeting upper elementary to high school students with outstanding motivation and ability in science and mathematics, JST supports universities, etc. that provide development programs to further enhance their ability, such as inquiry-based learning, STEAM education, entrepreneurship education, and other advanced and practical activities.
Support for Girl Students in Choosing Science Courses
This program encourages girls to choose science courses and provides activities to help girls understand potential career paths after graduating university. It provides junior high and high school girls with opportunities to exchange opinions and information with woman researchers and engineers, including hands-on lessons and visiting lectures.
Asian Science Camp
At Asian Science Camp(ASC), held during summer vacation in Asian countries, participants discuss with top scholars and promote the international friendship among students in Asia. JST sends Japanese delegates to ASC every year.
JREC-IN Portal
JREC-IN Portal is a career database that aims to support the expansion of researcher career paths by providing profiles of researchers and approximately 24,000 annual listings for positions in industry, academia and the government sector. Members are permitted to register and update their information and to use job alerts and other exclusive services.
Development Program for Program Manager(PM) Candidates
This initiative offers a training program for trainees who apply and are selected from universities, research institutions, and companies. The practical program, which goes beyond knowledge-learning, is made up of a first stage where participants learn the necessary knowledge and skills to be a PM and propose ideas for research and development programs, and a second stage where they put part of their proposed ideas and management into practice. JST also supports people who complete the program by providing information to help them with networking and to promote their active involvement.
Research Integrity
This project supports the improvement of research ethics education through workshops and symposiums, manages portal websites, and offers suggestions, etc. regarding consultations from research institutions and researchers. It also focuses on promulgating and educating people about fair research activities in cooperation and collaboration with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development.

This program aims to help PhD students become human resources that can actively pursue a variety of career paths.
Establishment of University Fellowships towards the Creation of Science Technology Innovation
In order to secure talented individuals who will advance from master's degree programs to doctoral programs, the program supports universities to improve conditions and assist in the career paths of doctoral students, who will be responsible for the future creation of science, technology, and innovation in Japan, under an integrated, university-wide strategy.
BOOST (Broadening Opportunities for Outstanding young researchers and doctoral students in STrategic areas)
BOOST is a program for developing highly urgent national strategies. This is a program that promotes human resource development and cutting-edge research and development in the field to improve Japan's international competitiveness radically.
