Report of the Second PO Seminar in Japan |

The Second Program Officers Seminar in Japan was held on 20 January at Japan Science and Technology Agency, Tokyo Headquoaters. More than 200 people participated in the seminar.
The keynote speech, "Introduction and establishment of PO and PD system in Japan" was presented by Dr. Koichi Kitazawa, Executive Director of JST, PD for JST Projects.
As Part 1, we had 3 speakers for "Reports from overseas training participants".
Mr. Masahiro Sato, Deputy Manager of Deepartment of Research Project at JST presented "The role of Reseach Councils as Funding Agency in UK". Dr. Kaoru Manabe, Deputy Director of Health Sciences Devision at Minister's Secretariat, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare presented "The role and structure of PO at the Medical Research Council". Dr. Yuriko Murakami, Counsellor for Research and Development of Forestry and Fisheries Council Secretariat at Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan Agriculture presented "The peer review at NIH".
The Part 2 was titled as "Efforts of PO system induction to Japanese Competitive Reseach Funding Agency". Mr. Yoichiro Takagishi, Deputy Director, Office for Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology, Research and Coordination Division, Science and Technology Policy Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) presented "Role of Program Officet at special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology". Ms. Maki Kubo, Department of General Affairs Manager at Japan Society for the Promotion fo Science presented "Program Officer's Efforts at JSPS". Dr. Yoshinari Inukai, Program Officer of R&D Promotion Department at New Energy and Industrial Technology Developement Organization presented "The role of Program Officer in Industrial Technlogy research grant at NEDO". Finally, Mr. Akio Ishida, Research promotion Department Director at Japan Science and Technology Agency presented "Institutional design of Program Officer at JST".
As "Invited Lecturers", we have invited 3 lectureres. Dr. Torsten Hotopp, Program office of Chemistry and Process Engineering Division, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) from Germany presented "Basic Reseach Funding in Germany, Instruments of the DFG and Roles of POs for R&D". Dr. Richard K. Nakamura, Deputy Director of National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health (NIH) from USA presented "The role of Program Officer at NIH". Finally, Prof. Hiroaki Suga, Professor of the University of Tokyo, reseach Center for Advanced Science and Technology presented "Critical roles of PO/PD in "Peer-Review" funding systems".
Through the whole seminar, interesting and vigorous exchange of questions were revolved. |
