Report of the First PO Seminar in Japan

Schedule of Seminar   Results
The First Program Officers Seminar in Japan was held on 21 September at Nihon Kagaku Miraikan (in Odaiba, Tokyo). More than 200 people participated in the seminar.

Seminar
The keynote speech, "Introduction and establishment of PO and PD system in Japan" was presented by Dr. Hiroo Imura, Former Member of CSTP and Program Director for the Special Coordination.
Dr. Christopher A. Loretz, director of NSF Tokyo Regional Office presented "About NSF as Funding Agency for S&T promotion in US". Dr. Machi F. Dilworth, Director of Division of Biological Infrastructure at NSF (USA) presented "About PO career path". Dr. Enriqueta C. Barrera, Director of Geobiology and Environmental Geochemistry Program at NSF (USA) presented "About PO working system and evaluation".
Finally, Mr. Nigel Birch, University Interface Manager, EPSRC (UK) presented "Managing Research Funding in the UK: the role of the Research Councils".

Panel discussion was proceeded with a lively exchange of views about "What is an ideal PO system?" Dr. Koichi Kitazawa, Executive Director of JST, PD for JST Projects, took a part of chairman. As panelists, Ms. Philippa Rogers, first secretary of Science and Technology, British Embassy in Tokyo and Dr. Taizo Yakushiji, Member of CSTP participated in addition to 4 lecturers.
