The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has approved funding for 35 new research projects through its ASPIRE initiative, which includes the programs "ASPIRE for Top Scientists" and "ASPIRE for Rising Scientists."
The call for proposals invited applications from Japan-based researchers and international partners supported by eligible counterpart institutions. The seven designated fields were: AI and information, biotechnology, energy, materials, quantum, semiconductors, and telecommunications.
A total of 54 proposals were submitted to "ASPIRE for Top Scientists," of which 17 were selected by expert evaluation. For "ASPIRE for Rising Scientists," 91 proposals were submitted and 18 were selected.
Each "ASPIRE for Top Scientists" project will be funded for approximately five years, with support of up to 500 million JPY (including 30% indirect costs). Each "ASPIRE for Rising Scientists" project will be funded for approximately three years, with support of up to 90 million JPY (including 30% indirect costs).
