JST is to fund 2 joint research projects coordinated by e-ASIA Joint Research
Program (e-ASIA JRP) in the field of “Bioenergy”

The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) conducted the 5th joint call for proposals in collaboration with 5 organizations*1 from 5 countries within the framework of the e-ASIA Joint Research Program (e-ASIA JRP)*2, and with the approval of the e-ASIA Board, has agreed to commence support for 2 collaborative research projects in the field of “Bioenergy”.

The selected projects are as follows:

“Feasibility Study on Social Implementation of Bioenergy in East Asia”

Japan: Masahumi Katsuta, Director, Environmental Research Institute, Waseda University

Thailand: Paritud Bhandhubanyong, Executive Director, Panyapiwat Institute of Management

Vietnam: Tuan Le Anh, Dean, School of Transportation Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology

Indonesia: Anugerah Widiyanto, Head of Technology Incubators, Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology

Myanmar: Ei Ei Htwe, Associate Professor, Department of Research and Innovation, Ministry of Education

Lao P.D.R.: Bounmy Keohavong, Director, Souphanouvong University

This research aims to conduct feasibility study of social implementation of bioenergy in East Asia by region-wide collaboration among ASEAN countries and Japan. Hands-on training of young researchers is also included in this research.

“Development of New Processes with Thermotolerant Microbes for Bio-refinery Including Biofuels”

Japan: Mamoru Yamada, Professor, Graduate School of Sciences and Technology for Innovation, Yamaguchi University

Thailand: Savitree Limtong, Professor, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University

Indonesia: Anton Muhibuddin, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Brawijaya

Lao P.D.R.: Somchanh Bounphanmy, Associate Professor, Faculty of Natural Science, National University of Laos

This project aims to develop new processes for bio-refinery including biofuels using thermotolerant microbes from tropical environment, towards utilization of ASEAN biomass.

A total of 9 proposals in the field of “Bioenergy” was submitted in response to the joint call. Based on the results of evaluation conducted by experts, JST and other participating funding organizations jointly decided on the two successful projects to select for funding. Support to the projects will continue for about three years.

*2) The e-ASIA Joint Research Program (e-ASIA JRP)

Through the acceleration of science and technology research exchange and collaboration in the East Asian region, the e-ASIA Joint Research Program (e-ASIA JRP) aims to strengthen research and development capabilities towards resolution of shared challenges across the region.

As part of that objective, the e-ASIA JRP is intended to support collaborative research implemented among 3 or more of its member countries. Through the implementation of joint research among participating countries in agreed fields of research, it is the goal of the e-ASIA JRP to contribute to economic and human resource development, as well as the resolution of various challenges in the East Asian region.
