The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) conducted the 5th joint call for proposals in collaboration with 5 organizations*1 from 5 countries within the framework of the e-ASIA Joint Research Program (e-ASIA JRP)*2, and with the approval of the e-ASIA Board, has agreed to commence support for 2 collaborative research projects in the field of “Bioenergy”.
The selected projects are as follows:
“Feasibility Study on Social Implementation of Bioenergy in East Asia”
Japan: Masahumi Katsuta, Director, Environmental Research Institute, Waseda University
Thailand: Paritud Bhandhubanyong, Executive Director, Panyapiwat Institute of Management
Vietnam: Tuan Le Anh, Dean, School of Transportation Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology
Indonesia: Anugerah Widiyanto, Head of Technology Incubators, Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology
Myanmar: Ei Ei Htwe, Associate Professor, Department of Research and Innovation, Ministry of Education
Lao P.D.R.: Bounmy Keohavong, Director, Souphanouvong University
This research aims to conduct feasibility study of social implementation of bioenergy in East Asia by region-wide collaboration among ASEAN countries and Japan. Hands-on training of young researchers is also included in this research.
“Development of New Processes with Thermotolerant Microbes for Bio-refinery Including Biofuels”
Japan: Mamoru Yamada, Professor, Graduate School of Sciences and Technology for Innovation, Yamaguchi University
Thailand: Savitree Limtong, Professor, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University
Indonesia: Anton Muhibuddin, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Brawijaya
Lao P.D.R.: Somchanh Bounphanmy, Associate Professor, Faculty of Natural Science, National University of Laos
This project aims to develop new processes for bio-refinery including biofuels using thermotolerant microbes from tropical environment, towards utilization of ASEAN biomass.
A total of 9 proposals in the field of “Bioenergy” was submitted in response to the joint call. Based on the results of evaluation conducted by experts, JST and other participating funding organizations jointly decided on the two successful projects to select for funding. Support to the projects will continue for about three years.
