Gaol 8: Vision of Society in 2050 (Illustration)
What will society look like in 2050?
An illustrated guide on what society might look like in 2050 if Gaol 8 is realized

A variety of observations on the ground, at sea, in the ocean, in the sky and from space will provide increasingly detailed and enormous data for weather conditions. More sophisticated weather theory and simulation technology combined with these big data will significantly increase the accuracy of weather forecasting. Also, the track and intensity of typhoons and the local development of linearly elongated precipitation zones will be predicted with high accuracy. Based on the forecast of the distribution of rain and wind, it is possible to predict with high accuracy which areas will be affected by disasters such as floods, landslides, and wind storms, including its intensity estimates.

In order to avoid or mitigate weather-related disasters, control techniques are being developed one after another to control weather that has been considered difficult to control. By the butterfly effect in the atmosphere, it will be possible to create large control effect with small intervention. For example, the scattering substances in the sky can alter the location and timing of convective cloud development, or the propellers of offshore wind turbines or sailing vessels can alter the wind locally in a preferred direction. For the operation of weather control, the national and international consensuses are built, and the weather control is carefully implemented each time when a disaster is predicted, by taking into consideration not only economic feasibility but also ethics, including environmental considerations.

The realization of weather control will prevent disasters such as river overflows and landslides caused by typhoons and torrential rains, saving precious human lives. In addition, transportation systems will be kept safe, and various events and leisure activities, such as sports, will be able to take place as scheduled. Agriculture and fisheries will also be more stable. It is also important to take care that mismanagement of weather control does not lead to problems such as droughts or long-term changes in climate. In this way, we will be able to live in piece with the bounty of nature.
