Message from the Research Supervisor

In the Internet-based information society providing a variety of services, important challenges are (1) to control increase of the total energy consumed by a huge number of information equipment toward sustainable societies, and (2) to overcome the reliability degradation and the performance limitation due to increasing heat dissipation caused by information systems to explore a new application frontier.

Based on such recognition, our research area "Technology Innovation and Integration for Information Systems with Ultra-Low-Power " (ULP research area : http://www.jst.go.jp/kisoken/crest/en/category/area04-5.html) started as Core Research of Evolutional Science & Technology (CREST) program of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in 2005. The goal of the research area is to create innovative ultra-low-power technologies that can increase the processing performance for a unit power consumption of information systems by a factor of 100 to 1000 in a variety of application areas including super computers, network servers and mobile equipment through an integration of technology innovations at all levels of system’s hierarchy, i.e. devices/circuits, architecture/VLSI, system software and algorithms.

We have already held a series of the Symposium in 2006, 2008, and 2010 as an opportunity to widely disseminate a perspective that the outcomes of the research area have a potential to strengthen industrial competitiveness and impact on technology trends in 5 to 10 years after its research completion and to contribute to the green innovation agenda, as well as to accomplish world-class research toward the goal for each individual team.

In order to widely invite the international community to evaluate our research results, we will hold the JST-CREST Symposium co-located with "International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design" (ISLPED2011) for which the researchers of the top level of this field get together. In the Symposium, research results for each subject will be presented in the morning session of the first day of the ISLPED. In the afternoon of the first day and all day long in the second day, demonstration exhibitions and poster exhibitions are performed at the exhibit site of ISLPED2011. Moreover, in order to demonstrate a potential impact of the research results of the entire domain on the future information society, an integrated form of ultra-low-power information systems that can describe a feasible picture of future information society and industrial structure will be presented and exhibited.

I invite all of you to participate in this interesting, fruitful, and enjoyable symposium.
