Basic information of the Research Area

[Q-MATL]Quantum Material

Research Supervisor

Eiji SaitohProfessor, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo

Strategic Objective

Towards discontinuous technological innovation through quantum materials research

Overview

In this research area, we broadly define "quantum materials" as "substances, materials, and structures that exhibit new physical properties and quantum functions through the control of quantum states such as electron motion, spin, photon, and quasiparticles." The aim is to create and control new quantum functional materials that can contribute to solving various social issues through the processes of synthesizing, measuring, processing, controlling and understanding quantum materials.
In this research area, we will explore a wide range of quantum materials, including strongly correlated electron materials, spintronics materials, topological quantum materials, two-dimensional layered materials, solid-state quantum light sources, nanophotonics materials, novel superconducting substances, quasiparticle systems, metamaterials, and nonequilibrium materials driven by external fields. We will promote research aimed at discovering new materials, realizing new quantum functions in existing materials, enhancing their functionalities, materializing ordinary matter to quantum materials driving external field, and controlling these quantum functions, with researchers in theory, experiments, measurements, growth, process technologies, and control technologies stimulating each other.
The quantum materials created in this area are expected to be deployed in future applications such as computers, measurement and sensing, communications, and green semiconductor electronics.
