Strategic Objective
Overview
This research area aims to expand the frontiers of quantum science and, on that basis, to create new principles, methods, and technologies for the future. Here, “uncharted” means finding new directions in quantum science by asking new questions and developing new viewpoints and approaches. At the heart of this area is the idea of understanding quantum theory as Fundamental Quantum Science.
Based on this perspective, the area broadly covers research on the foundations of quantum theory, the boundary between quantum and classical phenomena, and the principles behind measurement, information, correlation, and dynamics. It also includes experimental studies that observe, control, and create quantum states and quantum phenomena in new ways, as well as studies of the deep mathematical structure of quantum theory, including quantum gravity, noncommutative probability theory, and quantum resource theory. By bringing together diverse challenges across theory and mathematics, experiment and measurement, and materials and devices, this area seeks both to deepen our understanding of Fundamental Quantum Science and to cultivate seeds for future technologies and new visions of society, thereby opening new frontiers in quantum science.
