ERATO Evolving Symbiosis Project International Seminar Series #25

Dr. Michael Baym (Harvard Medical School, USA)
“Acellular pressures on plasmid evolution”

Abstract: While plasmids are often thought of as the vehicle of horizontal gene transfer and a major driver of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, they themselves also evolve. I’ll discuss some engineered systems to study the factors beyond host fitness affecting plasmid evolution, and what they tell us, from within-cell competition between mutants to new bacteriophages that parasitize conjugation.
