Session 10 - March 24, 2022 at Tokyo Headquarters
President Hamaguchi talked about a launch of Japan’s full-fledged preprint server “Jxiv, achievements of the 4th Mid- to Long-term Plan and the 5th Mid- to Long-term Plan, and promotion of “Plan B" against the COVID-19.
Then, Prof. Uchiyama Tomomi and Prof. Amano Hiroshi from the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability, Nagoya University lectured on Development of an apparatus for generating tabletop air curtains with excellent spatial barrier and virus inactivation function of A-STEP Program. From JST Strategic Basic Research Programs, Dr. Eiryo Kawakami (Team Leader, Advanced Data Science Project, RIKEN) gave a lecture Development of data-driven infection-control strategies based on stratification of preclinical populations. Dr. Kei Sato (Associate Professor, The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo) talked about Evolution of SARS-CoV-2. Finally, Prof. Takeshi Noda (Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, Kyoto University) delivered a lecture on Human organoid-based organs-on-a-chip addressing COVID-19 research.

Session 9 - February 15, 2022 at Tokyo Headquarters
President Hamaguchi announced the lectures commemorating the 3rd Brilliant Female Researchers Award (The Jun Ashida Award) will be held on March 10 and public call for FY2022 Fostering the next generation human resources programs. Then, Dr. Nakayama Ichiro, President, the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA) and Research Fellow, Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, gave a lecture on “Development of Next Generation Sustainable Aquaculture System.” He is a project leader of “Sustainable Society” mission area of the JST-Mirai Program.

Session 7- December 15, 2021 at Tokyo Headquarters
President spoke about the Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation (SPRING) program for FY2021 and FOREST program. Among FY2020-2021 FOREST researchers selected for funding, three researchers introduced their projects.
Dr. Komura Naoko, Assistant Professor, Institute for Glyco-core Research (iGCORE), Gifu University, lectured on “Clarification of glycans and its application based on synthetic chemistry” and Dr. Shimmura Tsuyoshi, Professor, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, delivered a lecture on “Why do chickens eat each other? Elucidation and control of genes related to cannibalism to provide safe and secure food.” Then, Dr. Imaizumi Masaaki, Associate Professor, The University of Tokyo, lectured on “New theory unraveling the principles of AI."

President spoke about FY2021 FOREST program. Among FOREST researchers selected for funding, three researchers introduced their projects.
Dr. Noriko Ogasawara, Lecturer, Department of Microbiology and Department of Otolaryngology, School of Medicine, Sapporo Medical University, lectured on “How do viruses multiply in humans?” and Dr. Sugita Yukihiko, Assistant Professor, Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences and Hakubi Center for Advanced Research, Kyoto University, delivered a lecture on “Clarifying the true form of the virus.” Then, Dr. Ueda Emi, Assistant Professor, Ophthalmic Function and Regenerative Science, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University, lectured on “Detecting signs of dementia in ocular examination. Towards future which enables early detection of dementia via health checkups."

The president spoke about the outline and goals of the Moonshot Research and Development Program, the announcement of winners of the 3rd Brilliant Female Researchers Award (The Jun Ashida Award) and its ceremony, and the Science Agora 2021. Then, two researchers who are adopted by FY2020 FOREST Program gave lectures.
Dr. Nonoyama Takayuki, Associate Professor, Faculty of Advanced Life Science, Hokkaido University, delivered a lecture on “The development of novel soft materials that are more than 1000 times harder at high temperature in a moment.” Dr. Hidema Ruri, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Science and Engineering, Kobe University, lectured on “Creation of Chemical Processes Using Nonlinear Nonequilibrium Phenomena---Understanding and control of phenomena that rapidly occur under the certain condition.”

The president spoke about topics and introduced two technologies awarded 46th Inoue Harushige Award. The Inoue Harushige Award Committee presented certificates and medals, and Watanabe Memorial Foundation for The Advancement of New Technology presented research incentives. Then, two awardees gave lectures. Dr. Ishikawa Kunio, Professor, Faculty of Dental Science, Kyushu University, delivered a lecture on “Carbonate apatite artificial bone.” Dr. Kubo Hiroko, Professor, Division of Engineering Research, Nara Women’s University lectured on “Development of an estimation technology for cooling and heating sensitivity based on thermophysiology.”

Then, two researchers who are adopted by FY2020 FOREST Program gave lectures. Dr. Umemura Masanari, Lecturer, Yokohama City University, delivered a lecture on “Unraveling mechanism of antitumor efficacy by an alternating magnetic field (AMF) and application to cancer therapy.” Dr. Sunagawa Genshiro, Research Scientist, RIKEN lectured on his research entitled “The future of humanity that is given by hibernation.”

The president spoke about an inauguration of the Vice President/Chief Investment Officer, Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation, and FOREST Program. Then, two researchers who are adopted by FY2020 FOREST Program gave lectures, and Professor Ishizuka talked about activities as a FOREST PO and her research theme. Dr. Sakuma delivered a lecture on “How do mosquitoes taste blood and get full? Taste perception and satiation mechanisms in pathogen mediated mosquitoes.” and Dr. Fujii lectured on his research entitled “Searching soil for possibility of FOREST.”
