Press Conference 2019 by the President
Session 8 – January 22, 2020 at Tokyo Headquarters
President Hamaguchi introduced the highlights of FY2020 budget and other topics. Then, Dr. Fukushima Toshikazu, Fellow, Center for Research and Development Strategy (CRDS), lectured on “Trend of AI research and development toward human-centered society—Safe and high-quality AI will be a competitive edge of Japan.” Next, Professor Kokuryo Jiro, Policy Management, Keio University, lectured “Humanities and social sciences for realization of a society that embraces a harmonious relationship between information technology and humanity,” and introduced an initiative of R&D focus area “Human-Information Technology Ecosystem,” the Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society (RISTEX).

Session 7 – November 8, 2019 at Tokyo Headquarters (K's Gobancho)
President Hamaguchi spoke about Science Agora 2019. Then, Professor Kondoh Michio, the Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University, and Miya Masaki Ph.D., Head of Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Natural History Museum and Institute in Chiba, delivered a lecture on “The environmental DNA meta-barcoding for detecting inhabiting fish species in a bucket of seawater sample.” Professor Kondoh, a research leader, and Dr. Miya, a collaborative researcher, had conducted research in the area of “Application of environmental DNA for quantitative monitoring of fish community and ecosystem assessment” under the research theme of “Establishment of core technology for the preservation and regeneration of marine biodiversity and ecosystems,” on JST CREST program.

Session 6 – October 17, 2019 at Tokyo Headquarters
President announced the recipients of the newly established the Brilliant Female Researchers Award (The Jun Ashida Award).
The winner of the award, Dr. Miki Ebisuya who is a group leader of European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Barcelona, lectured on “Re-constitutive Developmental Biology.” Then, the representatives from Kyushu University which is the winning organization: Toshiya Naito, Executive Vice President and Secretary-General and Prof. Eriko Jotaki of the Office for the Promotion of Gender Equality, lectured on “Discovery and development of female human resources and visualization of their performance.”

President talked about the Science Agora 2019. Ms. Okishiro, manager of JST introduced the Newly extended Technology transfer Program (NexTEP).
Then, Professor Yoshinori Fujisawa, Professor Emeritus, Advanced Research Institute, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, is also Research Director of the project “Real environment high resolution 3D bio-structural analysis system” funded by the NexTEP and delivered a lecture on “Development of Cryo-Electron Microscopy and its potentiality in drug discovery.”

President talked about the 1st Jun Ashida Award, the Japan High School Science Championships & Junior High School Science Championships and the Symposium on the International Science Olympiads in Japan. Then, Professor Mitsuhiro Nakamura and Designated assistant professor Kunihiro Morishima, both are members of Advanced Measurement Technology Center of Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability, Nagoya University, delivered lectures on their research: “Cosmic Ray Imaging Using Nuclear Plates-Visualizing Pyramids, Reactors, and Volcanoes” funded by the JST-SENTAN (Development of Advanced Measurement and Analysis Systems) program.

President talked about protection and utilization of intellectual property rights on JST’s research outcomes and introduced two companies from university-derived startups supported by JST’s capital investment program: SUCCESS. CEO Akieda of Cyfuse Biomedical gave a lecture on “Realizing regenerative medicine by bio-3D printing technology—Regenerating organs through industry-academia collaboration,” and CEO Azuma of Lily Med Tech spoke on “Principles and features of ‘Ring Echo’, a diagnostic imaging device for breast cancer.”
