Press Conference 2012 by the President

Session10 – March 28, 2013 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

The presentation by the President summarized the JST initiatives towards Innovation Creation in science and technology by reviewing activities of FY 2012 and introducing prospects for FY 2013.

Then, Dr. ENDOH Tetsuo (Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University) gave a lecture titled “Towards an ideal 3D IC with vertical-type CMOS devices.”

As another topic, the publication of the final report of a R&D program “Interaction between Science, Technology and Society” in the R&D focus area “Science, Technology and Humanity” conducted by the Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society (RISTEX) was announced by the President.

    This time, the President presented the JST budget plan for the coming fiscal year 2013 as well as the extra budget plan for the fiscal year 2012.

    Dr. HIRAI Shoji (Professor emeritus, Tokyo City University) then gave a lecture titled “Basic knowledge on radiation measurement technology and its reliability.”

    Furthermore, as particular topics, JST initiatives for the reconstruction and revitalization after the Great East Japan Earthquake were explained by the JST Center for Revitalization Promotion, and the upcoming event “The Second Japan High School Science Championship” was introduced by the President.

    In this first session of the year, the President outlined the initiatives JST has planned, such as the strategic promotion of the five priority areas, Innovation Creation through establishing and networking research sites, and the support for international collaborative research.

    Dr. HOSONO Hideo (Professor, Materials Research Center for Element Strategy and Materials and Structures Laboratory, Tokyo Institute of Technology) then gave a lecture titled “Returning the fruits of basic research to society and to the world.”

    In this session, the President described the “Development of Advanced Measurement and Analysis Technology.”

    Dr. MOMOSE Atsushi (Professor, Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University) and Mr. NAGATSUKA Sumiya (Team Leader, Konica Minolta Medical & Graphic, Inc.) also gave lectures titled the “Development of innovative medical imaging by detecting weak X-ray refraction.”

  • Session6 – October 18, 2012 at Tokyo Headquarters (K’s Gobancho)

    First of all, the President mentioned Dr. Yamanaka's award for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and his relationship with JST. Then the subject “Constructing a renewed R&D system focusing on Nanotechnology and Materials” was explained by the President.

    Dr. HASHIMOTO Kazuhito (Professor, Department of Applied Chemistry, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo), also gave a lecture titled “The role of researchers in the nanotechnology and materials field towards Green Innovation.”

    The other topics presented were “Science Agora 2012,” “LCS Symposium,” “New research areas selected and these Research Directors in ERATO,” and “New research projects selected in ACT-C.”

    In this session, the President introduced JST's activities relating to “Green Innovation Initiatives.”

    Dr. KANAMURA Kiyoshi (Professor, Tokyo Metropolitan University), then gave a lecture titled “Development of completely solid-state battery as post-lithium ion battery.”

    The other topics presented by the President were “Strategic initiatives through priority fields in the budget request for FY 2013,” “Publication of the paper in Science concerning the relationship between science and politics in policy making and implementation,” “Innovation Japan 2012 – University Innovation Fair,” and “Merit Award for Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration 2012 – Four awards to JST's projects, including the Prime Minister's Award.”

    This session, titled JST in the era of globalization - what JST should do, began with the President’s speech on the subject.

    Dr. YAKUSHIJI Taizo, then gave a lecture titled Science and Technology Diplomacy and SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) as one of its specific projects.

    The other topics the President picked up were JST’s role in the nanotechnology platform project, the release of the joint committee report on support measures for science teachers in elementary schools (prior notice), and a prior announcement of a press conference for the second "Science Koshien" (national competition of science for students.)

    In this session, the President described our activities concerning “life innovation,” the strategies based on innovative medicines and medical technologies.

    Dr. MANO Hiroyuki (Professor, Department of Medical Genomics, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo / Professor, Division of Functional Genomics, Center for Molecular Medicine, Jichi Medical University), also gave a lecture titled Life-saving cancer research.

    Other topics picked up by the President in the briefing were the development of a power outage prevention contact network in the Kansai region, results of the survey on science education in elementary schools in FY 2010, and the opening of the Japan Link Center (JaLC).

    This session presented the topics with respect to safety and security. the President explained our contribution to the nation’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the integrative promotion of infectious disease. Dr. ABE Hiroyuki (advisor of JST), then talked about a proposal called Science and Technology for a Safe and Secure Society.

    On the subject of our contribution to the nation’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, the President described some of the research outcomes of the Urgent Implementation-Support Program conducted by the Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society (RISTEX), and the new activities of this fiscal year, including those concerning radiation measurement, analytical technology, and equipment and system development.

    JST has entered the third phase of its mid-term plan in this fiscal year. In this session, the President outlined the new mid-term plan and described its targets. This was followed by a Q&A session with journalists.

    In particular, the President explained JST’s management policy (its mission and vision), the role of JST in the creation of science & technology innovation, and the approaches adopted in the new mid-term plan. Other topics presented at the briefing included the integrated promotion of S&T innovation based on the strategic program package, and activities to promote reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
