Integrated Elucidation of Critical Period Mechanism by Live Brain Imaging

Research Project Outline

To understand learning mechanisms in the developing brain, a basic knowledge of neuronal circuit plasticity in early life, precise understanding of the various critical (sensitive) periods underlying diverse brain functions, and clarification of mechanisms of critical period closure are required. By establishing novel technologies, this project aims to visualize the process of neuronal circuit reorganization in the living brain that leads to the end of the critical period. As a result, not only learning mechanisms of the developing brain will be elucidated, but also measures for promoting lifelong learning in adults are expected.
