SOFC Systems (Vol. 9):
Techno-Economic Assessment of Hydrogen Energy Conversion/Storage Systems

Summary

A techno-economic analysis for the synthesis of ammonia, which is a promising energy carrier for using and storing renewable energy, was conducted. The cost of producing ammonia using hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water using renewable energy (so-called green hydrogen) was estimated.

Compressors and pressure accumulators (high-pressure gas cylinder) are required to store hydrogen, and they contribute to the high cost of hydrogen use. In this paper, the cost of an ammonia synthesis/storage system (ammonia storagetype system) based on green hydrogen was assessed, and the possibility of using hydrogen was examined. In the ammonia storage-type system, the system configurations including the Haber-Bosch method (HB method) and electrolytic synthesis were examined, and a comparative examination was conducted between the hydrogen production system including a compressor and a pressure accumulator (hydrogen storage-type system). Compared to the cost of the hydrogen storage type system, the same cost competitiveness is expected for the ammonia storage system. Assuming an electric power cost of 5 JPY/kWh, it was shown that the production cost of ammonia per unit of energy consumption is 3 JPY/MJ, the ammonia production cost per unit energy is ca. 3-4 JPY/MJ, which was shown to be cost competitive even compared to the hydrogen production cost (3 JPY/MJ).
