Abstract

Bornavirus (BDV) is a nonsegmented, negative-strand RNA virus. Among vertebrate RNA viruses (riboviruses), only BDV establishes a long-lasting, persistent infection in the cell nucleus. The mechanisms underlying BDV persistence could provide a new paradigm for the dynamics of RNA molecules within the cell nucleus. In this study, I aim to develop RNA technologies, which enable functional RNA to be stably maintained in the cells, by applying the unique strategy of BDV persistent infection and the reverse genetics system. The goal of this project is to uncover the in vivo usage of a novel ribovirus technology.
