Outline

This project aims to exchange graduate and undergraduate students between Malaysia and Japan to contribute to the development of local circular economy models in Malaysia. Developing the circular economy at the local (municipal) level involves addressing social aspects, such as the formulation and implementation of effective municipal policies, the development of waste sorting and recycling systems by local communities, and the utilization of waste by local businesses on a commercial basis. Through the project, participants will visit several advanced cases of the local circular economy in both Japan and Malaysia, focusing on, but not limited to, food waste issues, to gain insights focusing on social implementation aspects. The project goal is for participants to be able to make policy, technical, and socio-economic recommendations for realizing local circular economy models in Malaysia. We hope to foster research collaboration through exchanges and interactions between the participating organizations, as well as with municipalities and businesses. Looking ahead, we aim to develop a collaborative research project to co-create a local circular economy in a specific region or on a particular topic in Malaysia.
