Outline

This Young Scientist Exchange Program invites and dispatches undergraduate students (mainly 2nd and 3rd year students) and graduate students (mainly master-course students) from Malaysia and Japan to the University of Tsukuba and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, respectively, to experience cutting-edge research with the experts in sustainable environmental sciences. Specifically, The participants will stay for approximately two months in the laboratories of the faculty members at the University of Tsukuba and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, in which various environmental issues are studied, such as climate change, water resources and water environment, disasters, ecosystems and biological resources, food, and population. Meanwhile, the participants will interact with the faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students. In particular, one of the main highlights of this program is a comprehensive research internship on Biological soil crusts (BSC) technology. BSC technology was recently developed in Japan to stabilize soil by spreading microalgae biomass to form a biofilm. Consequently, it prevents soil runoff caused by heavy rainfall, and improves water quality. The participants will study BSC technology from an interdisciplinary perspective, including biology, disaster prevention, and hydrology in this program, and will have opportunities to pursue more advanced research and study in the Joint Master's Degree Program in Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (JMSES) administered by the University of Tsukuba and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
